Responsible uses for AI face swap

Your own face, start to finish

The clearest case there is — your photo, your likeness, your result. A costume you don't own, a period portrait, a character sheet nobody would book a studio day for.

A gift, once they've said yes

Your friend on a film poster is a good joke when your friend knows about it. Ask first, in words: a present is not an exception to someone's rights over their own face.

Try a look before you book it

Actors and models can see themselves in an era, a makeup direction or a lighting setup while it still costs nothing to change their mind about it.

Characters who look like you

Cast yourself in the party for a tabletop campaign, a game avatar, a comic panel. Single-player creative work, with nobody else's face in the frame.

Where the line is

Never onto intimate or sexual imagery. Never onto a real scene to make an event look like it happened. Never for harassment, or to pass yourself off as someone else. That is a breach of our terms, and access can be suspended over it.

The law is moving quickly

A growing number of countries and US states now treat non-consensual synthetic imagery of a real person as an offence, and the rules keep changing. Written permission is the one thing that holds up wherever you are.
